Microsoft OneNote is a free software from Microsoft that is used by millions of Windows and Mac users for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. OneNote allows gathering and creating of users’ notes (both handwritten or typed), drawings, screen clippings and audio materials. Notes can then be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network. Using Microsoft OneDrive, a user’s notes can also be made accessible by syncing these notes in any compatible devices.

Recently, with the release of several Microsoft Office Updates and Windows 8/10 Updates, a huge number of people reported that their OneNote (App) for Windoes 8/10 no longer open. Clicking on the OneNote App icon produces the normal splash screen but then it closes right then. Trying to open it again results to a Warning screen providing the option to Reset OneNote to default settings after being unable to open in the previous attempt. Clicking the “Reset” button however does no good.

If this happens to your OneNote 2016, options like clearing the cached data can resolve the issues. Repairing MS Office or reinstalling can be the last resort. However, if you are using the OneNote for Windows 10, which is an App, there is no way to uninstall it from Control Panel.

This article will describe how you can uninstall the Microsoft OneNote App in your Windows 8 or Windows 10 computer. If you need to repair or uninstall OneNote 2016, then you can easily do it in Control Panel.

Using PowerShell to Remove Microsoft OneNote App

Since Windows Apps installation information are not listed in Control Panel => Programs and Features, the only way to remove them easpecially in troubshooting faulty apps is through the Command Prompt.

Step 1: Open an “elevated” Command Prompt (DOD Prompt). By “elevated”,  it means opening it as an Administrator. This is done by right-clicking on the Microsoft logo button (the Start button) then in the context menu that appears, click on “Command Prompt (Admin)“.

NOTE: Another way to do this is to type "CMD" in the Search box, and in the displayed results, right click on the black CMD or Command Prompt icon, then click "Run as Administrator".

Step 2: In the elevated Command Prompt, type the command “powershell” (without the quotes) and then press Enter to execute.

Step 3: In the PowerShell window (the same Command Prompt window but with PS in the command line), type exactly the command below. I suggest that you copy the command in this articla and just right-click on your PwerShell window to paste it easily. Press the Enter key to execute the command.

The command is (copy and paste): get-appxpackage *microsoft.office.onenote* | remove-appxpackage

Running powershell

Step 4: When prompted by a pop-up to confirm the command, click Yes or OK to proceed.

Step 5: Wait for the command execution to be finished. You can tell that it is done executing the command when you are getting a new line of command prompt that is ready to take another command.

Step 6: In this case, just type Exit to exit the PowerShell mode and get the basic Command Prompt mode. Then type Exit again and press Enter to exit or close the Command Prompt.

Step 7: Click on << this link >> to go directly to the OneNote App download page. Click the button to download and install the Microsoft OneNote App for Windows 8 or 10.
