Outlook 2007/2010 Tip: Using SCANPST to repair corrupted, bloated and faulty Outlook email

As you are using MS Outlook 2007, 2010 or the latest version, it will accumulate emails and over time, the program's data files (Outlook.pst by default) can become bloated or corrupted. As a result, you will start to experience problems in using MS Outlook.

Fixing your Outlook problems using the SCANPST.exe tool

Among the common problems of Outlook when your PST files are bloated or corrupted are the following:

  1. Outlook won't send emails
  2. Outlook won't receive emails
  3. Outlook freezes after opening with the notice (Not responsing) at the top of the title bar
  4. Outlook opens normally but nothing happens when you click to open an email
  5. Outlook won't delete emails
  6. Outlook won't move emails to folders
  7. Outlook shows error messages at startup

Using SCANPST.EXE file to repair Outlook PST file

If you are experiencing any of the problems above, then you can try repairing your PST file using the SCANPST.EXE file commonly known as the Inbox Repair Tool. The Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe) is designed to help repair problems that are associated with personal folder (.pst) files like the scenarios listed above.

How to Find the Inbox Repair Tool

To use the Inbox Repair tool, locate one of the folders by using Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then double-click the Scanpst.exe file.

The Scanpst.exe file for Outlook 2013 is located in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15
 
For other version of MS Outlook and MS Windows, the location may be different. The Scanpst.exe file is typically located in one of the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

For Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2000:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT

For Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\95

The Scanpst.exe file for Outlook 2007 is is typically located in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12

The Scanpst.exe file for Outlook 2010 is typically located in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office(x86)\Office14

Double click on SCANPST.EXE file to open it then browse to the location of your PST file to start the repair.

NOTES: Repairing your PST file with the Inbox Repair Tool is critical. For security purposes, you can locate your PST file and then COPY it to a safe location as a BACKUP before using the SCANPST.EXE file.
