When you have MS Outlook 2007, 2010 or any version for your emails, it will be easier to just click on the attached files to open them rather than to save them first to the computer and opening them afterwards. However, in some cases of Excel, attached .xls/.xlsx files do not open when clicked from MS Outlook or other email programs.

Excel files attached in Outlook emails are not opening

If you are experiencing such problem on Excel files not opening when clicked or double clicked in Outlook's email attachment, there are the things that you can do:

Check if Excel is Set to Ignore Other Application

Excel has the option to be triggered by other applications or to simply ignore them. If it is set to ignore other applications, then attachments from Outlook will not open in Excel when they are clicked or double clicked in Outlook.

To set Excel NOT to ignore other applications, here are the steps:

  1. Open MS Excel and open the file that is having this problem.
  2. In MS Excel 2007, click on the circular MS Office Logo, then click on Excel Options button.
    Excel 2007 Options button
  3. If you are using Excel 2010, click on File then click on Options.
  4. In the Excel Options dialog box, click on Advanced link in the left panel.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom part and locate the group called "General"
  6. UNCHECK the option that says "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)"
Excel settings to ignore DDE applications
  7. Then click OK button.
  8. Close Excel

After doing that, when you click on an Excel file that is attached in your Outlook email, Excel shall now open and load the selected file.
