How to secure a hacked Yahoo Mail account

After you have successfully recovererd your Yahoo Mail account, this does not mean that your account is safe for the following reasons:

  1. The hacker might have changed your email settings to forward all your emails to the hacker's email without you knowing it.
  2. The answers to your security questions might have been altered slightly
  3. Your security questions might have been altered slightly that you might not notice
  4. The hacker might have set another "reply to" address so that when your contacts reply to your email, the reply will go to the hacker's email address, not yours.

Yahoo Mail provides a secure email service. However, for already-hacked accounts, you need to double check the four items listed above to ensure that your email account is still secure after being compromised.

Securing the Hacked Account

  1. Go to http://mail.yahoo.com and sign in to your Yahoo Mail account.
  2. After signed in, click on the small gear icon at the top right corner of the page
  3. Click on Mail Options

  4. In the left panel, under Advanced Options, click on Mail Accounts.
  5. Check for the "Reply to address" field. If there is an unknown email address listed there, delete it.
  6. Click on the Save button.

  7. Now on that same Mail Options page, click on the bottom link in the left panel called "POP & Forwarding". If it is enabled and an unknown address is listed there, delete the email address, disable Forwarding, then save your changes.

Congratulations! Your Yahoo! Mail account is now secured.
