How to add or update security information on your Gmail account

How to add security information to protect your Gmail

NOTE: This process will only work if you can still access your Gmail account. If you are reading this and your Gmail account is already inaccessible, please go to this article to Recover Your Gmail Account.

Adding Security Information to Protect Gmail

Step 1: Login to your Gmail account using your web browser by going to http://gmail.com.

 

Step 2: Click on your avatar or icon at the top right hand corner of the page, then click on Account link in the pull down menu that appears.

Step 3: In the  page that displays, you will see the portion called Email & Phone.

Step 4: Since you are about to access sensitive account information, you will be prompted to enter your password again.

Step 5: You can modify your old security information by clicking on any of the Edit links that you see there. But you can also do so by clicking on the "Account Recovery" link at the bottom part of the Phone section.

Step 6: After clicking the "Account Recovery" link shown above, you might be prompted to enter your password again. Then you will get a new window or tab named "Account recovery options".

Step 7: For your mobile number, click on EDIT next to the number and then enter your new mobile number. Then click on the EDIT button for the "Recovery email address" and then enter new or accessible email address. You can also EDIT your security question and answer.

Step 8: Lastly, you can "Add alternate email address" to your account.

Step 9: When you are done, click on the SAVE button at the bottom.

Step 10: Congratulations! Your account shall now be secured. In case someone else is trying to hack your account, you will receive a text notification from Gmail in the mobile number you provided. You can easily reset your password and you will get the reset code in your mobile phone, or in the recovery or alternate email you provided in your Gmail.

NOTE: You will be receiving email notifications from Gmail in your primary Gmail account about the changes made in your security information. Just ignore them as you were the one making those changes.
